Many utilities will have to be placed under your name when you get divorced. You have to have your own credit, especially when you begin to put these accounts under your name. There are times when utility companies will refuse to approve your application if you do not have a previous one.

You have to find an effective way of making a good credit for yourself so that utility companies will have good background information on you. To achieve this, make sure that your conjugal accounts are turned into individual ones. This should be done before the divorce proceedings are over to avoid complications.

Major utility companies that you need to get in touch with are electricity, telephone, water, garbage, and insurance companies. These are the most used ones so apply to them immediately. Starting from these gives you a good foundation for your own name.

You also have to make sure that accounts with outstanding balance are paid. If these are conjugal accounts, it may be wiser to settle these first before you transfer them under your name, especially if you will be staying at the same place even after the divorce. You may, however, have to discuss the matter with your attorney and your former spouse.

Make sure that you the pay bills on time when you transfer the utilities under your name. This will be an advantage to you, especially if you’re preparing for an upcoming credit.

This will help you get your life back on track and make you feel in control again. It might be hard at times but you can do it with persistence and determination.
